Solivagant
In the quiet solitude of a forest, where every rustle of leaves whispers ancient secrets and every ray of sunlight dances upon the earth in silent celebration, there resides a profound truth – the essence of Solivagant. In this book, I encourage you to embark on a journey guided not by maps or compasses but by a vision, a quest really, to capture moments of transcendent beauty in the ephemeral dance of existence.
Solivagant, derived from Latin roots – solus meaning alone and vagans meaning wandering – encapsulates the essence of solitude in movement, the tranquillity found in solitary wandering. Solivagant is not merely a state of being but a way forward, a pilgrimage of the soul where every step is imbued with mindfulness, and every encounter with the world is a dialogue with the divine.
Within these pages, you will find not only photographs but vocal fragments of my spiritual odyssey, a testament to a reverence for the interconnectedness of all things. Each image is a meditation: an invitation to pause and contemplate the intricate tapestry of life, where the ordinary always becomes extraordinary, and the mundane is infused with the sacred.
You’ll witness the silent symphony of nature and humanity – the whisper of a breeze through the leaves, the gentle sway of a village matriarch, the passing beauty of a cloud. In these moments of stillness, we find not emptiness but a fervent fullness – a recognition of the inherent beauty and interdependence of all existence.
Solivagant is not merely a collection of photographs; it is a reflection of a journey – a finger pointing to the moon of enlightenment. Each image serves as a mirror, inviting us to look inward and discover the beauty that resides within our own hearts. In the midst of chaos, we find serenity; in solitude, we find deep connection; and in the act of wandering, we find our truest selves.
As you embark on this visual pilgrimage, may you find encouragement to ponder the silent spaces between the images and uncover the truth that lies at the heart of Solivagant – that in a state of quietude we discover the boundless expanse of the universe, and in the wandering of the soul, we find our true nature.

About
Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi Rinpoche
The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi Rinpoche is the Founding President and CEO of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a non-partisan collaborative think-and-do tank focused on interdisciplinary research and programs related to the development of human and global ethics.
Venerable Tenzin was born into a Hindu family in Vaishali, India. At the age of ten, under his own volition, he entered a Buddhist monastery in Rajgir, near the ancient Nalanda University. His interest in photography began at the age of eleven, when he received his first “point and shoot” camera as a gift. Beginning in 2000, he embarked on a series of photographic essays (that continue to this day) using a Canon Rebel camera. Since 2005, he’s been using digital Canon 20D, 5D and iPhone cameras (or whatever is at his disposal) for his powerful and poignant images.
A monk and a scholar, Venerable Tenzin’s multilingual and multicultural education contribute to his photographic vision. He considers his end products to be projections of his imagination, as well as reflections of the world he experiences in his travels across the globe. He finds photography contemplative, serving as a vital development tool for a calm, clear, and decisive mind. It is also instrumental in gaining appreciation for the profound “illusory” displays of nature.
Venerable Tenzin lectures worldwide on Buddhist philosophy, conflict resolution, and ethics-empathy initiatives. His vision is ecumenical and global.
Proceeds from the sale of Solivagant – as well as Venerable Tenzin’s photographic exhibitions – go to support the activities of The Prajnopaya Institute & Foundation. For more information on Venerable Tenzin and his work, please visit iMonk.org
